after hearing her new album concept i ran to watch this and this was so worth it !!! i wish i watched it 15-20 years ago! amazing work from all involved!!!

If you feel intellectually fulfilled by spending time trying to dechipher a piece of abstract art, or following a jazz session, this movie may appeal to you. If you prefer storylines you can follow, this movie will strain your sensibilities. Jim Carrey's acting captured the chaos, randomness & loneliness that can sometimes siphon off the joy & playfulness in a romantic connection. It resembled a patchwork quilt, a piece of new fiction that makes the reader flip pages back & forth to try to recall the chronology. As a film, I found it demanding,not engaging, & the indoor scenes screamed out for editing. Not a mood lifting film.

Even in its imperfections

This movie is thought provoking, amazing and just captures what love is and how you interpret it. Without putting only spoilers out there however you interpret the ending as shows how you view love. For me, I’m a hopeless romantic so the ending for me I interpreted is that love… love is hard. It makes you vulnerable, it’s so frickin’ scary but love is so beautiful at the same time. Love is not always sunshine and rainbows because love will be like that only if you’re looking through rose tinted sunglasses. I’m not saying love should be miserable no, love should be fun! But if all you’re doing is going for having fun, are you even in love are you just infatuated? That’s what the movie has taught me. It hurts you right in the gut, slaps and punches you in every direction but in a way… it changed how I view love.

Such wonderful acting, so real and raw. Wishing for more movies like these! I’m a big overthinker so this movie is literally for me haha

An amazing movie. So entertaining, unpredictable and original. Great all star cast. Not a dull moment. I love how Jim Carrey completes immerses himself in his role. This may contain his best acting ever.This film is worth seeing over and over again.

really unique movie and so well done. jim carrey plays a very introverted role, unlike the crazy, over-the-top characters he usually plays. kate winslet is the goofball, wild child in this one.

despite being polar opposites, personality-wise, they end up being a couple but break up and on a whim, kate goes to a place to have her memory wiped of their relationship. jim finds out and does the same thing, out of spite, but in the middle of the process, regrets it and tries to prevent the erasure of his memory of their relationship from happening.

i won't give the rest away but it's a great story with great performances. i can't think of another movie like this. it was truly unique and definitely not what you'd expect from jim and probably not from kate, either. i really feel they went out of their comfort zones yet still knocked it out of the park.

movie made me feel real lonely i love it

Being misled as a kid that life was going to work out like a romantic movie really left me feeling lost as an adult. I began to hate romantic movies because of how fake they came across. When I found this movie it really changed my life. It is a real love story with all the ups and downs. I watch this movie at least once a month. It’s so inspiring and edited to perfection. I’ve never seen anything like this before. I’m so appreciative we were all blessed with this movie.

I never like these concept movies. They seem so overworked and forced. This, however, is brilliant. how did they evvery work out the scenes? None take more than 90 seconds. Carey and Winslet are great together. A classic.

It's 2016 and this is still my favorite movie. Such a great romance. Makes you think about whether it's better to have loved than to not love at all. Would you erase someone who you loved and lost?

I recently discovered this film and didn’t except what I received. I sobbed, I laughed, I told everyone I knew to watch this movie. The story was incredible, the acting was fantastic, the end left me speechless. Don’t miss this film!

This is and will remain one of my all time favorite movies, even after all this time. It's a movie I can watch when I'm feeling sad or when I'm feeling happy. I didn't expect a sad Jim Kerry movie :(

I had to watch this movie again. I'm so glad I did. I caught so many details that I overlooked the first time. It's simply so beautiful; the director does such a great job transitioning. The flashbacks, the whole entire idea of erasing memories, is so amazing. My only advice: watch it carefully; absorb very detail and you'll enter into a mesmerizing trance. Great cast. Great acting. Funny. Depressing. Something you'll never forget or regret watching. I have to watch more movies by this director!

amazing movie, and yes it's good for after a break up, in my opinion. the simple complexity of emotion over the thought of whether it's better to have the heartbreak than to not have anything at all.

A crazy way to explain how baggage kills a relationship, and how they could be restored if you could dump that baggage. Great movie.

Honestly, the best movie I've seen

I wish I hadn't known what the film was about before I watched it.

It's a masterpiece. The concept is great, but pales in comparison to the execution and mood the movie evokes.

Now first things first, this is my favorite movie. Now some people have called this a choppy over thought movie, well to the simple minded yes. But the thing about this movie is it really makes you think about love and relationships, and if you watch it closely or More than once you'll get an amazing storyline that really pulls at the heart strings. It's a more realistic, raw romance movie not some fairytale love, and it takes you on an actual journey that leaves you mystified.

Summary: Awesome, smart, and touching movie!

This movie defies categories and made me like Jim Carey for the first time. Winslet is strong. Kirsten Dunst has an energy in her sadness that's palpable, but not overdone. Supporting cast especially the doctor, is well acted.

Protip: Don't watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind on Valentine's Day, after a breakup

This is one of the best films I have seen in a long time. The acting is impeccable across the board. The plot is ingeniously crafted and executed. I would strongly recommend steering clear of any synopses, the story is much better going in blind. The visual effects are subtle but contribute tremendously to the themes at play. Finally the soundtrack is one of the best I have heard in a while. It complements the movie's tone beautifully. A must see- 5/5 stars.

- I tend to dislike saying anything is "best" or "favorite" since they're really very limiting ideas, but I have to say this is one of my favorite movies ever made, and possibly "the one."

- I know some hard core reviewers have found the portrayal of emotions and the ideas themselves simplistic (often while appreciating the stylistic / formal approach), but I find it difficult to attach any negative criticism here, since in my experience the actual experience of these - especially the emotions - is simple, if hard to communicate without sentimentality or reliance on a excessively severe "realist" treatment.

- To me, the form and style pull an end run around the difficulties of expressing the sense of these issues. And I know that not every romantic breakage has the specific components of longing presented here, so anyone who hasn't experienced that might not see a justification for the storyline. But I think even this is addressed in the sub plots, if more subtly than the rest of the issues and experiences addressed.

- At the absolute least, I think Eternal Sunshine is an admirable and even courageous approach to a complex of experiences that is, at least in some form, universal.

The greatest movie ever made. Original, beautiful, emotional, inventive, and unlike anything else out there.

Incredible, hilarious, and sad movie. Carrey was incredible. So were Ruffalo, Dunst, Wood, Winslet, and Wilkinson.

This movie is definitely not a comedy...none the less, I think this movie was absolutely incredible...mind boggling if you will. Watch it. You will not regret it.

I loved this movie.

Quite depressing… but with a tantalizing premise: forgetting painful memories. I found this a movie to be a story of the adoration of love at the human idol-altar of Romantic Love. Anyone (even polar opposite kooks like these) can handle blazing romance, especially as mad-cap as this. What excitement! What bliss! Romance is like a narcotic. But sooner or later the "feeling" wears off and the agony begins. This is not what any committed relationship should be, especially long term commitment (marriage) which the movie never addresses. It's message is basically, do whatever you feel like. And try to purposely forget the consequences. Hedonism has a hefty price. As a film it is good, with fine acting. As a message, the movie is ultimately a lie. In this milieu, there really is no spotless mind or eternal sunshine… the title belies the nihilistic message of the movie. PS: Where in God's name is the FDA?

I saw this movie at the theater when it first came out. It hit me at a personal level during that point in time in my life. I love this movie and also the soundtrack.

This was more than just a movie; it changed my view on things. Everyone and everything, good memories or bad, are precious and aren't worth forgetting. Phenomenal film.

Though it was released in 2004, I recently discovered it. What a great movie!

I watched this again right after the credits finished rolling, and after seeing it two times in four hours, I can honestly say that I love this movie. The tropes and devices it uses are rearranged to create something beautiful. Despite the whimsical nature of much of the movie and the non-chronological storyline, it realistically portrays characters who don't have it all figured out, even by the end of the film-- like one the Washington Post reviewer asserts, it is "neither wholly cynical nor wholly romantic." To me, it's a grown-up (500) Days of Summer.

(Also, re: the comedy distinction, a comedy is a serious story with a happy ending, according to classic definitions).

This is one of my favorite films. It hit me on a personal level because I can relate to Joel and the way he experiences the world. I relate to his social awkwardness and quiet soulfulness. A lot to say but unsure of how to voice it. Either out of fear or uncertainty. I've also met a girl like Clementine that filled me full of life and excitement but also cut deep like a razor. Like a burning match beautiful and volatile fading away quickly. Even though it was painful, her memory will be cherished. There are so many layers to this film that I will have to watch it over and over. It is like life, ambiguous. Neither happy nor sad just hopeful for an uncertain future.

The memory of my first love...at least that's how I felt when he and I broke up the "first" time. Excellent actors, creative, an idea I've mused about when heartbroken. Loved it!

When I talk about this movie, it is so hard to describe to people - something like sci/fi crossover to romatic something or something. But the strangest thing about this film is that when you descibe the story and how the whole thing develops .. everyone can connect with the experinces.

It's just an incredibly original, unique, but lovable experince.

very quirky movie, would have been so much better minus Jim Carrey and Kirsten Dunst. For me it's painful watching Carrey try to validate his "serious actor" credentials when all he does is pick roles that allow him to stand around with a dopey look on his face, which is his natural expression.

If you have not seen this movie, then you need to buy it asap. To me, this movie appeared overly philosophical. I felt like there were more hidden meanings than one could count, many of which an average viewer could not infer. It was frustrating watching Joel deal with his surroundings in such an awkward way. I completely agree with the reviewer that said that this film came off as "pompous"; I believe that was it's ultimate goal. Despite the well-known names in the cast, I consider this film a flop. I also find it ironic that it is listed as a comedy; I laughed one time and was terrified with at least 3 other parts. For the most part, however, the film was very well acted and merits the 3 stars that I gave, despite the hard to follow plot.

This movie has been my favorite movie for a while now, and it still gives me the chills every time I it. It keeps me in check with my emotions and reminds you how beautiful love is when you're stuck in a rut. I would definitely advise anyone who has not seen it, to do so. I feel like I need to watch it a million more times. This is the most artistic, beautifully acted, incredibly written, well put together movie I have ever seen. NO down side. Other than maybe the fact that I've only seen it once. Love love love!

The movie, overall, is intriguing. The interactions between characters in the film are a bit quirky. For example, the friends of Joel and the workers for LaGuna have very bizarre relationship dynamics. Joel and Clementine are not exempt from this quirkiness, but I do feel that it is it is what makes them such a unique couple on the screen.

The end of the film is very powerful. It revealed to me the importance of relationships, and how impossible it is to stop wanting to be with someone. I have never been so emotionally impacted by a film. I have never cried as much as I had during this film. Know that it is as powerful as it is quirky, but understand that this is what makes it so fantastic. I strongly advise watching this with good friends, lovers, or family.

This movie is beautiful. Truly a work of art. Easily one of my favorite movies, if not #1.

It blew me away in the first few minutes! I am an avid moviegoer/critic and this one is one of the best I have ever seen. It's beautiful. I don't know what else to say... watch it!

I'm shocked that this has only a few reviews, but then many likely own the DVD already. This is the thinking mans romantic movie. Very poignant and touching. Very well acted by Jim Carey, who is unfortunately sticking to his tired comedy roots. Brilliant in their time, but so overused and overplayed that it's just enough already. His natural talent for drama is amazing and this movie is no exception. The rest of the cast is spot on as well. Rent, buy....you'll love it.
