Welcome to The Daily Quote – a podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, for December 15th. Let me ask you this: Are you wearing something so gloriously hideous that it could stop traffic? If not, you might want to go raid your closet because today is Ugly Sweater Day.

Yes, it’s the one day a year when looking like a walking Christmas tree is not only acceptable but encouraged. And in the spirit of embracing the “ugly” in life, I’ve chosen a quote that fits like a garish, glittery, oversized mitten:

This one is from Marilyn Monroe, who once said:

“Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius, and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.”

Marilyn’s words are basically the manifesto of Ugly Sweater Day, don’t you think? I mean, there’s something undeniably beautiful about wearing a sweater adorned with blinking lights, pom-poms, and maybe even a reindeer or two. It’s a celebration of imperfection. Most of us spend way too much time trying to look polished, presentable, or—dare I say—Pinterest-worthy.

But today? Today, you can ditch the chic aesthetic for something loud, absurd, and unapologetically you. It’s a reminder that beauty isn’t about being flawless—it’s about embracing the quirky, the unexpected, and yes, even the downright ugly.

Think about it: the most memorable people in life are often the ones who don’t take themselves too seriously. They’re the ones who’ll wear the sweater with a 3D Santa and say, “Yeah, I did this on purpose.”

Ugly Sweater Day gives you permission to be “ridiculous,” as Marilyn puts it. And let’s be honest: between boring and ridiculous, ridiculous is always the better option. Life’s too short to wear beige every day—or to avoid standing out. So, put on that sweater and let the world see your festive, imperfect, genius self. Bonus points if it jingles when you walk.
