The Syria Trials takes the listener on a trip through the stories around the scattered landscape of justice and accountability efforts for the atrocious crimes committed by the regime in Syria, since it violently suppressed the peaceful revolution in 2011.
Less than a year after the Koblenz trial, the world’s first criminal trial to convict a Syrian official, we explore the other trials now underway, as well as the cases being built, that all set out to bring about justice for Syria. Where are we now on the long and complicated road to justice? What does the road ahead look like? What can the law and international justice do - and what can’t it do - for Syria?
Across 11 episodes, The Syria Trials hears the stories of survivors, activists, journalists, doctors, lawyers, writers and many others, who have all been impacted by the criminality of the Assad regime. With them, we try and piece together the jigsaw puzzle of investigations, cases, and stories, in an attempt to better understand what has happened in Syria since 2011, and even before, the wider context these crimes happened in - and where we go from here.
