This episode I interview Dr. Anna Lembke, MD, Chief of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Lembke is a psychiatrist expert in treating addictions of all kinds: drugs, alcohol, food, sex, video games, gambling, food, medication, etc. Dr. Lembke is also an expert in the opioid crisis, and the author of Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence (https://amzn.to/3AHHGBp).
We discuss the biology and psychology of why people become addicted to certain substances and behaviors and the key role that our "dopamine balance" plays in creating addiction. We also discuss the science and practice of how to conquer addictions, why people relapse and how to avoid relapsing. Dr. Lembke also shares her expertise on topics closely related to addiction such as community, shame and lying and she explains why telling the truth—even about the most basic things in daily life, adjusts dopamine levels in our brain.
This episode is an important one for anyone struggling with addictions of any kind, for their friends and families and for health care professionals. It is also for anyone who has defeated addiction and is determined to stay clean. Last but not least, it helps explain why all humans do what we do, and how we can all maintain a healthy sense of pleasure seeking in life.

Great great graet

Incredibly useful science-based materials. I am personally very grateful. Although the subjects are quite complicated in nature, they are put into simple understandable words. Thank you for this amazing content.

Truly helpful and informative

I am so happy that a friend of mine recommended this podcast to me, as it really stands out from what’s available out there. Mostly because the content delivered by Andrew is well structured, thorough and supported by scientific proof. It doesn’t promise any quick fixes however, the episode about stress gave me a lot of easy and immediate tips on how to breathe for a result I’m looking for. Totally recommend!

Empowering

Andrew Huberman passes his neurobiological knowledge along and it impacts your life. I am 28 and before this podcast, my sleep schedule was always scattered. I considered it out of my control. Then I tried the suggestions of getting light of the sunrise, resulting in a regular sleeping patter!!! My life improved and got steady. I am very grateful.
All Andrew talks about is based on science and he is a master of contextualisation and communication. The emphasise on mechanistic insights allows to adapt, try and apply the suggestions made.
Further Andrew seems to be a nice human being capable of being transparent. He talks to his best knowledge and corrects himself if new information comes along. A great teacher.
Andrew, thank you for your effort. Your words changed my life by empowering me with knowledge.

Warning - could change your life…

This Podcast for sure changed mine - I feel quite silly to put it that way - but it is certainly true. It had a huge impact on my personal and my professional life, which also meant to change some of my beliefs radically. I am very confident to put it like that: there is to my knowledge nobody more competent, thoughtful, open-minded and sincere out there, giving you this enormous amount of knowledge concerning your mental and physical health, than Andrew Huberman. He makes this none about himself, but all about you. Beautiful.

Very information dense yet practical

There are few if any podcasts out there that teach you so much in so little time. And although it teach in depth methodology there is lots of practical information that I have already been able to put to action in my daily life.

Value

Incredibly interesting podcast. Nothing you can listen too while driving or working out on your bike. Some episodes I had to listen to twice because a) it was so complex b) it was so interesting c) I needed to take notes. 5/5.

Suggestion/requestrequest

Hello Dr. Huberman,
I have listened to two podcasts in which you intervened as the guest and was immensely interested in the subjects and your explanations. I have therefore subscribed to your podcast and just listened to your excellent first episode. In both the podcasts where you were a guest you offered to send scripts for accessing better sleep states and for accessing the state of hypnosis that you describe as being a combination of deep relaxation and heightened focus. I was frustrated to not have access to these scripts so I am hoping your podcast audience will be able to access those and other « tools » that you have discovered or developed. Good luck with your podcast and numerous projects. I will be following your work with great interest.
