Criminology student Elizabeth McKenzie doesn't know much about her past. 

All she knows is that her drug-addict mother abandoned her when Elizabeth was only five and hasn't been seen or heard from since. Her father went to jail soon after charged with numerous violent crimes and was murdered while he waited for his trial. Elizabeth grew up in the foster care system and has the scars to show for it. Undaunted, she's attending college to study criminology in the hopes of understanding her family's dark past. 

When she's contacted by a cold case investigator after her mother's sneaker-clad foot turns up in the waters off the coast of British Columbia, Canada, Elizabeth's life starts to unravel. 

The man she thought was her father is nothing of the sort. 

Her real father is a mysterious financier living in an opulent mansion near Seattle, Washington.

They reunite, but something isn't right. 

Elizabeth isn't sure where to turn for help until she meets Tess McClintock, crime writer for the Seattle Sentinel, and former FBI Special Agent Michael Carter. Together, they begin to dig deeper into Elizabeth's past.

But will she like what she finds?
